Literacy is the essential building block for the acquisition of knowledge, and it is key to student success in school.

Students who do not read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers. Struggling readers are disproportionately low-income students and students of color. In Minnesota, the literacy gaps between low-income and high-income students, and between white students and students of color are stark, and the literacy gaps lead to achievement gaps.

Early detection is key.

Proper literacy instruction can change the trajectory for students struggling with reading and make education more relevant to each learner. The research is clear – reading difficulties need to be identified and addressed as soon as possible. However, most interventions are introduced only after a child has struggled for several years. That’s why it’s critical to detect difficulties early and deploy personalized instruction.

Personalized instruction meets technology.

Research demonstrates that students who receive one-on-one tutoring make significantly greater gains in comprehension than those who receive group intervention or no intervention. Limited resources inhibit schools from delivering individual instruction to each student, and private tutoring is out of reach for students who often need it the most.

That’s where Literacy Matters’ program comes in.
