Assignment 1: Text Structure

Step 1

Explore Topics in Text Structure
Within Content Literacy you will find a section on Text Structure. The topics within Text Structure include Introduction to Text Structure, Compare and Contrast, Sequencing, and Cause and Effect. Under each topic, we have listed relevant Sites That Matter. These carefully chosen sites contain descriptions of effective research-based practices. You will need to explore these sites in preparation for Step 2.
Step 2
Choose a Practice
Now that you have explored the different topic areas within Text Structure in Step 1, please select the one topic that is most relevant to your teaching situation. Return to that topic and carefully review the web sites listed under Sites That Matter. Select one or more practices that directly apply to your curriculum goals and students' needs. You will be reflecting on and discussing the practices in Step 3.
Step 3
Think and Write
Think more deeply about the practice you selected from one of the web sites in Sites That Matter. Write about this practice by posting an entry in the blog discussion. Please carry out the following three steps:
  1. List the name and URL (address) of the web site that contains the practice you selected.
  2. Describe the practice in approximately 50 words, and explain why you selected it.
  3. Describe how you would use this approach or strategy to help struggling students in your classroom.
Step 4

Reply to a Posting
For this week's discussion, please read three to five of your classmates' postings about text structure. They can be within the same or different topic area. The idea here is for everyone to share and learn from each others' postings so that as a collective group we are able to learn about new classroom practices. Select one posting that interests you.

Post a response (approximately 50 words) that includes your reactions, a teaching suggestion, and/or a question to the writer. Also read about, visit, and comment on the web sites your classmates have chosen. What did you learn?

Post your response under the relevant category: Introduction to Text Structure, Compare and Contrast, Sequencing, or Cause and Effect.

To access this week's discussions, use the links provided in Step 4 or the navigational menu to the left.
