Online Research
The
Internet contains a huge amount of information and resources that
can complement students' research. But with such a large number
of resources, many teachers ask, "Where do I begin?"
Literacy
Matters has culled "the best of the Web" to help teachers
deepen and expand their knowledge of the principles, strategies,
concerns, and skills needed to effectively and safely conduct
research online. This section contains everything teachers need
to begin maximizing the potential of the Internet for student
research.
Check

areas:
- Finding
Information provides an overview of Internet tools including
search engines, web directories, research and reference web
sites, Ask-An-Expert sites, and searching strategies to help
teachers get started.
- Evaluating
Information presents key criteria and questions to think
about when evaluating web sites for quality and appropriateness
for students, as well as rubrics, checklists, guidelines,
interactive activities, evaluation forms, and surveys that
can help students learn how to evaluate web sites.
- Tracking
and Citing Information offers information for teaching
students how to track resources, create bibliographies, and
properly cite information they find online.

resources to help teachers navigate the Internet effectively
and develop a solid knowledge base of key Internet terminology.

Research Skills provides a definition of Internet research
and outlines the online research process, skills students
need, strategies to help students learn to paraphrase, and

Safety presents an overview of the safety factors and
potential pitfalls teachers should know about before using
the Internet with their students, as well as strategies, guidelines,
and policies for ensuring that students are safe online.
