Are you in grade four or above? Do you want to improve your reading and writing? If so, welcome to Literacy Matters, a place where you can improve your skills in reading for meaning and writing to express your ideas.
Literacy Matters invites you to try out our three interactive online activities:
In Help Lee Decide, Lee is a high school student who is trying to make a decision about a summer job. He is talking with his friends about their plans and needs help in deciding which of their jobs would be most interesting to him.
In What Should Maria Do?, Maria is a middle school student who has been invited to go on two summer trips. The problem is that they are both planned for the same time. She needs to choose between two exciting places: The Grand Canyon and the beach.
By helping Lee and Maria make decisions, you will be practicing an important skill: how to compare and contrast information in your reading and writing.
In American History Idol: Thurgood Marshall, we have built upon the popularity of the competitive American Idol "reality" shows. We give you the opportunity to promote Thurgood Marshall, a lesser known figure in American History to "American History Idol" status by identifying cause and effect relationships.
Enjoy the activities!
Additional Software Tools The KidTools Support System (KTSS) is an OSEP-funded project which provides performance support software for kids ages 7-13 who have learning disabilities and/or emotional and behavioral problems. Free copies of the KidTools and KidSkills software can be downloaded from their web site or CDs can be ordered for a modest cost.

The Strategy Tools software is made to support students in being successful in high school and beyond. The software gives students a set of electronic tools to help them get organized, learn and pass tests, complete projects, solve personal problems, and prepare for transition to adult life. There are 39 different Strategy Tools to use in high school and transition to adulthood.
The tools are easy to create and can be printed out for use.
All they need is a Windows platform computer! As a federally-funded project, the Strategy Coach web site provides downloadable tools and the opportunity to hear others talk about how they are using the tools. Students can even make their own tools to use in school or at home.
